Five years after it launched, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing at UC Davis has announced plans for a $50 million building on the Sacramento campus it shares with the medical school and health system.
The school opened in 2010 with 33 students. In September the school expects to enroll 143.
As the school grew, it spread to available space across three buildings. The three-story, 70,000-square-foot building will be the fourth in the educational core of the Sacramento campus of the University of California Davis. Construction is expected to start in November and be completed in the fall of 2017.
“We need a building to support both our growing research and education programs and to sustain our vision of innovation far into the future,” associate vice chancellor and founding dean Heather Young said in a news release.
Betty Irene Moore Hall will have collaborative learning spaces rather than traditional classrooms. There will be state-of-the art simulation labs where care scenarios play out on one side — while debriefing rooms on the other side provide a place to discuss decisions made. Plans include an eight-bed hospital ward, skills labs and a 15-room primary-care clinic.
McCarthy Building Companies was selected to lead the design-build project after a competitive bidding process. The architectural firm is WRNS Studio of San Francisco.
In addition to the new building, renovation is planned for the administrative support building next door. Construction will begin in the next few months to transform 15,400 square feet of office space into active-learning classrooms. This project is expected to cost another $9.1 million.
The nursing school was founded in 2009, backed with a $100 million commitment from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Currently, the school offers four graduate-level programs in nursing science and health-care leadership. A fifth, a master’s degree program, is expected to enroll its first class in 2016. Full enrollment at the school — about 420 students — is expected by 2022.
Funding for the new hall includes a portion of the foundation grant as well as investment from UC Davis. Room-naming opportunities are available to fund equipment and other support.
